Aikido (合気道), literally translated as "the Way of Gathering with Ki" is a Japanese self-defense with a strong philosophical slant, developed in the early 20th century by Morihei Ueshiba. Morihei Ueshiba, called O'Sensei (great master) by aikidokas, was inspired by the techniques of the Japanese samurai, martial arts and fighting sports such as jiujitsu and kenjutsu. Morihei Ueshiba also added a moral value to the art of aikido, which was derived from the then new Japanese religion Omoto-kyo.
